On June 8, 2026, a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao, with its epicenter located near Maasim in Sarangani Province. The event caused widespread destruction across southern Philippines. The country lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the convergence of several major tectonic plates makes it one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Initial reports indicate thousands of homes and public buildings were damaged or destroyed, alongside widespread impacts to roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals. More than 45,000 people were displaced, while landslides and numerous aftershocks further complicated emergency response efforts.
