Typhoon Bavi – July 1-11 2026
Typhoon Bavi formed on 1 July 2026 in the western Pacific Ocean and tracked west-northwest and then north over 13 days, reaching Category 5 equivalent intensity (287 km/h sustained winds) as it passed near Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. The system curved north through the Philippine Sea, brushed eastern Taiwan and Japan’s Ryukyu Islands, and made final landfall in Zhejiang Province, China, near Yueqing (Wenzhou prefecture) on 11 July as a tropical storm. GDACS classified the event as Red Alert. Initial reports indicate at least 134 injuries in Taiwan and approximately 2 million precautionary evacuations in Zhejiang Province. The worst-exposed areas include the Wenzhou coast and Zhoushan archipelago in China, Okinawa Prefecture in Japan, and Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, which experienced the storm’s peak intensity.

This map zooms in on the four priority sites identified along Bavi’s track — Wenzhou/Yueqing, the Zhoushan Archipelago (Mount Putuo), Hangzhou, and the Yilan–Hualien corridor in Taiwan — and displays the footprint of high-resolution satellite imagery (Maxar, Planet, Sentinel) available over each, filtered by Ground Sampling Distance (GSD ≤ 0.5 m) to ensure suitability for damage assessment, overlaid on the modelled wind-intensity field. Hovering over a footprint shows its provider, price, resolution, cloud cover, and acquisition date. Optical acquisition is expected to be constrained by cloud cover in the days immediately following the storm; Sentinel-1 SAR data can provide earlier cloud-penetrating coverage for flood and gross change detection.
